Avala is a hill located 18 km from Belgrade, and covered in deciduous and coniferous woodland. It is traditional place for day trips. In this pleasant environment, the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, by Ivan Mestrovic, was erected in 1938 on the summit of the hill.
